FIA uncovers alleged multi-billion rupee theft at Pakistan Steel Mills

A major corruption and theft scandal has been uncovered at Pakistan Steel Mills, where authorities allege that assets worth billions of rupees were systematically stolen over time, according to initial findings of a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) inquiry.
The investigation was launched after the Ministry of Industries and Production received a formal complaint highlighting suspected irregularities. Early probe results have revealed that valuable machinery, electrical cables, scrap material, and other key infrastructure components were repeatedly removed from the premises without proper gate passes or documentation.
Officials say these findings point toward possible negligence or collusion involving security personnel and Defence Security Force (DSF) staff assigned to protect the facility. One of the major breakthroughs in the case was the recovery of a 22-wheeler trailer carrying approximately 36 tons of government-owned material, further exposing the scale of the alleged network.
Investigators believe the thefts were carried out by an organized group involving internal employees, security staff, and scrap dealers working in coordination. The systematic nature of the operation suggests long-term exploitation of weak oversight mechanisms within the industrial complex.
Sources also revealed that although a First Information Report (FIR) was registered, it was reportedly downgraded to a “C-class” case shortly afterward, raising concerns that attempts may have been made to suppress or weaken the investigation. The FIA has now included this aspect in its ongoing probe.
Authorities have identified key suspects and facilitators allegedly involved in the network and say efforts are underway to tighten the net around those responsible. The case has intensified scrutiny over governance and security lapses at Pakistan Steel Mills, one of the country’s most important state-owned industrial assets.
The FIA has vowed to continue the investigation until all individuals involved are held accountable.
